Drum Lessons
for all ages and genders,
levels and styles.
ROCK is my specialty!
2 DRUM KITS!
(an awesome
way to learn!)
"About the students and the teacher..."
I offer a super drum program to students
of all walks of life, total beginner to the professional player. I always have something I can teach you.
Students of all ages come to New
York City to find teaching mentors who can show them what they need to know to play. The real deal! That's why I came
to the city...night clubs like Max's Kansas City, Peppermint Lounge, Wagon Wheel, Trudy Hellers, Home and Barney Googles. Studying
with the drummers that really lived the drumming life...that had those great playing hands I had only read about and heard
on recordings. When I met many of these wonderful drummers like Shelly Manne, Lennie White, Al Duffy, Jim Chapin, Sam
Ulano and Joe Jones, just to name a few....all of whom were generous in showing me hand technique for sticking and
gave me advice and foundation for drumming as a way of life. I loved hearing stories about their gigs and music life
in New York. And that is the way I fashion my teaching.
For beginners;
Play cool beats and fills (how
to travel around the kit), learning great technique, bounce and grip, basic rudiments, beginning reading and writing,
the friendly Metronome, learn to play songs from bands you like!
For the player;
(play those drums!)
Learn awesome grooves and fills, learning
"levels" of play, how to play without stress or tension in the body, speed and endurance, details of match or trad'l
grip, how to "mix" on kit, bass drum technique (move that foot!), metronome studies, a few cool marching cadences, the
short rolls, dynamics, Moeller System, Billy Gladstone method, rudiment studies, hand and foot development, independence,
how to play a press roll, how to take a solo, syncopation, musicality, archs, placement, reading and writing, AND MORE!!!
(and, of course, lots of stories about the music life here in New York.)
A bit more info:
Much of the world of drum kit can
be found in books but it must be taught by an experienced, patient and knowledgable teacher who connects to our
drumming history and who can bridge tradition to todays modern playing. My drumming mentors include: Allan Herman, Jackie Browne, Joel Rothman, Armand Santarelli
and Al Duffy. I began drumming in my teen years opening for
"The Byrds" in the 1960s. I have played and performed with many bands over the years and just embrked on my newest band
to be announced. I have taught beginners to players from the starting gig to the touring band to the "Gold Record"
and have been featured in Modern Drummer, Time Out Kids, Tom Tom, Drummergirl, Go Mag. I was the founder and drum
instructor for Female Drummers Workshop for twenty five years and continue now with Drummers Underground NYC.
Keeping it simple...find a category below
that might describe you and call or write to talk about your drumming. You can always come over for "Open Studio" to
check it out.

"Self-teaching
did not get me too far........"
Taking lessons with Paula was immeasurably valuable. She knew from
the first lesson exactly what I needed to do to become confident and play well on the instrument. Many, many thanks! John
